Hildegardis Divina Natural Perfume
Description
This natural perfume is a tribute to one of the greatest women of the medieval age, the 12th Century abbess, artist, healer and mystic Hildegard of Bingen.
Hildegard of Bingen was an abbess, healer, mystic, artist, composer and diplomat who lived in the Rhineland of Germany in the 1100s. Her idea of the world went beyond religion into a spirituality that is deeply connected to Nature and the cosmos. In many ways she was a shaman, a feminist, and a true Earth Goddess.
Inspired by Hildegard's writings about the divine essence, this natural perfume has sensual floral notes, herbal expressions and the anchoring aspects of trees.
I have worked with herbs, trees and flowers selected in accordance with the writings of Hildegard of Bingen in her works Scivias, Physica and Causae et Curae and her many letters.
I set out to capture an aromatic sense of viriditas, the fundamental greenness that infuses her worldview, and augment it with the plants that inspired her.
Features of this perfume include a fleeting sensation of citrus and heliotrope and sage lead one further into the garden of delights. Middle notes that are exquisitely green with a warm floral sweetness, like walking in the walled herb garden at Hildegard's abbey in early summer. While the base notes remind us of those cloistered walls with a hint of smoke and incense and the damp, deep green of oakmoss.
