I Thought I could be a Better Hermit than I am
Acrylic on canvas
91cm x 122cm
This was the first painting I did when I returned to New Zealand in 2011 after living overseas for over 20 years. I cam back to Hawke's Bay and lived in the house I had grown up in here. On my own and on a farm I soon came to realise that I was not as comfortable being so alone as thought I would be. This realisation amused me and I think is something that many can relate to.
The line "I thought I could be a better hermit than I am" was taken from a biography of Rita Angus.
