Aluminium Sulphate (Alum)

$6.00 NZD Sold out

Aluminium Sulphate or aluminium sulfate (Alum) is used as a mordant in the manufacture of ‘lake’ pigments. It is also used as a mordant for binding colour to protein fibres such as wool and silk. It is also  the safest of a handful of options and is popular with many natural dyers.

If you are dyeing textiles, Kathy Hattori of Botanical Textiles recommends aluminum sulphate with or without Cream of Tartar for wool and animal fibres, and aluminum sulphate for silk.
