Calcium carbonate is used to prepare traditional gesso wood panels for gilding. When working with natural plant dyes, it is also a common addition to the madder root dye bath to deepen shades and is one of the key minerals that create hard water. It is also used as a post-bath for mordanting cellulose fibres with aluminum acetate.
