Botanical name: Achillea millefolium

Positive attribute: staunches the flow, dries tears
Helpful when: emotionally wounded
Primary quality: Calm

Yarrow’s botanic name Achillea millefolium comes from Achilles. It is said he gave a pouch of yarrow to his soldiers to carry into battle as a first aid kit. Millefolium means ‘a thousand leaves’. Yarrow is a primo first-aid remedy as it is a styptic, which means it staunches the flow of blood. I’ve used it on many occasions for just this – I quickly pick some yarrow leaves, quick them a quick chew, and place them on the wound. The results are amazing!

In herbal medicine, yarrow is also used a diaphoretic, which means that it helps the body eliminate nasties via increased sweating. The three words I would use to sum up Yarrow are: Stop. Disperse. Eliminate. The 17th Century herbalist Nicholas Culpeper spoke of yarrow’s drying and binding qualities. Let is help you dry those tears.

Energetically Yarrow can step up for us in a number of ways. I feel yarrow staunching the flow of energy and spirit after an emotional or energetic wounding. It is as if Yarrow is stitching together tears and rips in our aura. I have used yarrow with work on the  3rd chakra, helping to stop the ‘leaking’ of vitality. If we are wounded in life and love’s battles, yarrow comes to our aid.
